WeekIn Review Feb. 2: Bird, Bird, Bird Discipline Is The Word!
Well another week is in the books for 2013, and I must say that the year is moving along with no lag which makes me think about my word for 2013. The word I chose to implement this year is DISCIPLINE. According to my Dictionary.com app, one of the definitions for discipline reads as follows: activity, exercise or regimen that develops or improves a skill. That being said, practice makes perfect and since my aspiration is to establish my video production business, I must apply a little discipline to make my aspiration a reality with whatever resources I have available to me.
It’s been years since I made a real New Year’s Resolution, but I felt it necessary to make 2013 the year of discipline because discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. Having discipline with the smallest things can make the biggest difference. For example, this week I started on two projects. One was developing a commercial for a catering business named Michia’s Delights; and two was creating graphics for a new cooking show I will be producing called Appetizer Hour with Phaithe.
My objective is to just be more productive in general when it comes to my business. In order to make this happen I have to exercise a little discipline when I come home from my day job as a paper pusher by spending more time working on projects instead of zoning out on the most comfortable couch in the world watching reality TV until I fall asleep.
I must be consistent with how I spend my free time as well as keep the distractions to a minimum. I try to manage what little time I have in the evenings and on weekends so I can get as much work done as possible. I remember before I got married, I would come home from my day job at about 6pm, grab a drink out the fridge and change in to some comfy clothes (well comfy shoes at least) then scurry to my office in the basement and get to work on editing or surfing the net for useful software and tutorials until about 10:30-11pm.
Now living in holy matrimony, I have a whole new list of responsibilities when I get home from work and I do not plan on giving up my career or my marriage so I had to find a way to dedicate enough time to both so neither suffers. When I get home from work I take a few minutes to refresh myself by ditching my work clothes and changing into something comfortable. Then I tend to any household needs, which usually in tells feeding the hounds and the husband. Now if I am not handling raw meat while I cook, I try to steal moments here and there to hop on my computer so I’m all set to start working on it when dinner is ready and the kitchen is closed for the night. So far this seems to be working I just have to nail it into my regular routine. I will use this blog to keep track of my progress.
This industry is filled with many pitfalls, haters, hurdles, disappointments and countless catastrophes but what does not kill a business only makes it stronger. Now when I look at it all, discipline is one of the few things I need in this business that does not cost me any money so it’s really no excuse for me not pulling this off at least. Well I feel the need to end this week’s blog with a quote about discipline I like:
“It is character that gets us out of bed, commitment that moves us into action and discipline that enables us to follow through.” -Zig Ziglar
Until next time… try a little discipline will ya?
