Age Aint Nothin But A Number: 55-Year-Old Grandma Cheerleader Wants to Join Dallas Cowboys
Age really ain’t nothing but a number for 55-year-old Sharon Simmons. The aspiring Dallas Cowboys cheerleader has had the dream since her early twenties.
Even with the odds against her, Simmons feels now is her time to shine.
“I thought about this when I was about 22 years old. I was a single mom, and I wanted to do it,” says Sharon. “This literally has been about the journey. I’ve met incredible people, I’ve learned so many new things.”
The grandmother spent decades raising a family and has won dozens of fitness awards. She also runs health and fitness website, FitnessAtAnyAge.com.
Sharon tried out for the team this past Saturday (May.5) with hundreds of teens and twenty-somethings. However, Sharon says she isn’t intimidated by anyone.
“I don’t see a number… If I do, it’s just a number. It’s not that I can’t keep up with [younger women] in the physical part of the training”.
The Huffington Post reports that if Simmons does make the cut she’ll be the oldest cheerleader in the league. She won’t be, however, the only grandma in the league. Suzie Sanchez of the Oakland Raiders is a grandma but Sanchez is only 37. Laura Vikmanis is the oldest NFL cheerleader at 42.
Here’s a video of Sharron Simmons, the 55-year-old cheerleader’s audition. Do you think she’ll make the cut?
